This package offers the benefit of a newborn examination screening with the with a postnatal check for both parent and baby.

The examination of the newborn screening, is a physical head to toe examination of your newborn performed within the first 72 hours after birth. This is usually performed by a paediatrician or qualified practitioner before you are discharged from hospital or at home if you have a homebirth. However, if you choose to go home, this can be completed in the comfort of your own home.

The examination of the newborn screening consists of:

  • The primary purpose of screening the newborn heart is to rule out congenital heart problems. This is performed by observing and listening to the newborns heart using a stethoscope. 8 babies per ever 1,000 born have congenital heart disease

  • The screening of the newborn hips is performed with a physical examination performed by the practitioner. The primary purpose is to rule out hip problems. Every 1 or 2 babies per 1,000 have a hip problem that requires treatment

  • Examination of the testes in male infants is to ensure they are in the right place. Approximately 2 – 6% of male infants born will have a problem with their testes that require treatment

The full examination will be documented in your baby’s red book and performed again at 6 – 8 weeks by either the GP or myself. Any deviations from normal will be referred for further investigations.
