Feeding Support and Tongue Function Assessment including Division

A holistic approach to assessing feeding and tongue function. At Aiyana Holstic Services we look at the entire situation and address all concerns regarding feeding, sleeping, reflux and tongue tie. My services are accessible to both breast and bottle fed babies upto 12 months. A division is only a small part of the journey and shoud your baby not require a divison, I will help to support you with the next steps depending on my findings. Here at Aiyana Holistic Services, it's not 'just a snip'.

We look at your baby, their body, feeding and oral function holisitcally. Identifying the issues and why they are presenting. We will only perform a divsion if necessary and once the tongue and mouth are in an optimal position to do so.

About Tongue Tie

  • Tongue tie also known as ankyloglossia is a congenital midline anomaly; where a short or restricted membrane under the tongue (lingual frenulum) can cause restriction and the ability for the tongue function optimally.

  • A tongue tie can affect ALL babies, both breast and bottle fed. The tongues inability to function effectively results in babies compensating whilst feeding and in-turn effecting milk transfer and causing trauma. Tongue tie does not only effect feeding, this midline anomaly can effect the entire body as the connective tissue runs down the body via the fascia. These issues can appear in speech, eating, sleeping, breathing and swallowing to name a few. A visual inspection of the frenulum cannot diagnose a tongue tie and a full assessment is required by a trained professional

In some instances these symptoms may not be the result of a tongue tie, occassionally muscualr tension can mimick a tongue tie but I will help you to navigate this and work on releasing that tension to still try and obtain optimal tongue function. I have experienced first-hand the challenges that can arise with tongue tie and is the reason I am so passionate about helping others to navigate this journey.

I will complete...

A thorough discussion about your birth, feeding journey thus far and feeding goals. A thorough assessment of a feed and trying different techniques or positions A thorough assessment for tension in your baby's face, mouth and body.

You will be taught the exercises to complete at home to continue with the tension release. A thorough assessment of tongue function using a well known assessment tool, Aftercare information, A follow up call to review how things have been going since the division or tension release.

 Follow up Appointment

Some babies require ongoing support with feeding, oral exercises and assessment of wound post divsion. I offer follow up appointments to ensure your journey continues on the right path and an optimal outcome is achieved. In cases of reattachment, a redivision is sometimes necessary and included in the follow up appointment if necessary.

Older babies occasionally need more time and work, as they have been compensating for longer and may have more oral tension than younger babies. In cases were several follow ups maybe necessary; we can arrange a package.
